Wedding Wednesday: Tip of the Week...What the Pros Want You to Know, Part 11
Gone are the days that bridesmaid’s are expected to wear exactly the same style dress. What’s popular now, is having your girls pick a dress from the same designer but in different styles. This way the girls can express themselves in a style that suits them, which will make them happier on the day of. We recommend choosing the same fabric and colour for all their dresses, but if the girls do end up picking the same style dress, you could always mix it up by putting the girls in different shades of the same colour.
Don’t think you are helping your bridesmaids by giving them a colour (like “green”) and telling them to go buy any dress they like! Easier said than done - keep in mind that every colour has a huge variety of hues (whether it’s a green or a pink or even a chocolate brown) and many hues do not work well together. Not to mention the fact that there are a number of drastically different fabrics out there that can create a “hodgepodge” effect! Help them out by giving them a designer and a colour from that designer (say “Jenny Yoo” and “Pistachio Green Silk Shantung”) and then let them choose whatever style they want within that - all styles are available to view on most designers’ websites.
Let your bridesmaids enjoy a proposal of their own! Think of creative ways to ask your girls to stand up for you on your special day. You could ask them over a weekend brunch with “will you be my bridesmaid?” cards, or take it a step further, and surprise them at Frocks with a personalized window display (i.e. your name above the bride mannequin, and your bridesmaids names above mannequins standing by her side wearing your chosen wedding colours!). To avoid suspicion ask your girls to join you for an afternoon of shopping for wedding accessories!

The Wedding Garter...
This ritual began the night of the wedding when the newlyweds would turn in for the evening and family and friends would follow behind trying to grab something from the bride, or from the groom. They would take what they retrieved downstairs to the reception to prove that the bride and groom had consummated their marriage.
This of course annoyed the newlyweds, so the groom would actually take it upon himself to remove the garter from his bride and toss it into the crowd people; using that as proof that they had consummated their marriage.
Of course, the times have changed and the modern interpretation is much more tame then its origins. Today, the bride wears the garter on their wedding day and takes it off at the reception where is then tossed into the groomsmen crowd. The man who catches the garter is said to have good luck and will be the next to marry; similar to the throwing of the bouquet.
Don't forget to enter this month's DG Giveaway and win a garter of your own! Follow the modern tradition of today or create an interpretation of your own!

Wedding Wednesday: Tip of the Week...What the Pros Want You to Know, Part 10
Fashion for you & your groom…
Book your tuxes at least 2 - 4 months in advance (minimum 4 months during the busy months of June through September). Before you book your tuxes, discuss who will be paying for the tuxes and who will be putting down the deposit for the order, etc. Know what color the Bride's and the Bridesmaid's gowns are, since that will dictate the colour of the shirt and ties. The Groom should always look more formal or at least slightly different than the Groomsmen, just as the Bride stands out, so should the groom!
When shopping for your dress, be sure to bring with you a couple different bras (i.e. halter, low-back, strapless, etc.) and wear g-string underwear. If you are planning on wearing form shaping undergarments, such as Spanx, don’t forget to bring those along as well as dresses always fit better when one is wearing the proper undergarments. Secondly, choose a dress that highlights your best features. Think of an outfit that often earns you lots of compliments… Perhaps it’s that strapless dress that shows off your shoulders or an a-line skirt that enhances your curves. If you are still unsure of the right style dress for you grab a trusted friend and make an afternoon of trying on dresses in your closet. Figure out what makes you feel and look your best. Allow at least 6-12 months to have a custom dress made for you.

As soon as you are ready, start shopping for your dress. Delivery times are only an estimate and leaving it too late could result in your not having the dress you wanted in time for the big day. When dealing with ‘off the rack’ purchases the garments are often being ordered from overseas and so things like customs and high demand for a certain style of gown cannot be predicted and may delay delivery. Be aware that alterations are always an extra cost because there is no way to know how a particular dress is going to fit your frame until you get it on. When ordering a dress off the rack all sales are final due to the fact that dresses are not stocked and are only cut and made upon official order of the dress.

Hi Geneve,
I wanted to thank you for introducing me to the world of wedding planning!!! Initially when I enrolled into the course I was slightly unsure of my motives and intentions within the industry. However after going through the courses and seeing the success that you and Sarah have created I am certain that this is the industry that I want to be in.
Also to note :) I would be more than happy to help out any way I can should you ever need any volunteers. Please do keep in touch.
Sincerely,
Melissa

Wedding Wednesday: Tip of the Week...What the Pros Want You to Know, Part 9
Register at least 3 months before your wedding so that you have time to choose the best items and are not rushed into throwing together a registry list. It always takes longer than you anticipated and can be very exhausting so it’s best to spread out creating your “wish list” over two or three visits to the store.
Be sure to check on and update your list as needed to ensure there are enough choices for your guests to choose from. It is frustrating for your guests to come in to the store only to find out that there's almost nothing left on the registry to choose from!
Prices should not be a factor in your choices, since this is a special occasion and a time for your guests and family members to give you gifts that are special and will be cherished for a very long time you should choose things you really like and want and not worry about how much they cost. If an item is a little costly people will join together and purchase those items for you as a team.

Finding the Perfect Venue...
Finding the perfect venue can be one of the more challenging steps in the planning process. On average, a bride will spend anywhere from 10-20 hours working to secure the perfect venue. Maximize your time and that of the venues by keeping in mind a few key points as you short list options to visit.
- Will there be other events occurring simultaneously? Before/After?
- Are Outside Vendors Permitted; Caterers, Decorators, Rentals, DJ, etc.
- Are their restrictions surrounding Live Music/Entertainment?

How to Deliver a Great Toast...
- Eat Something beforehand. You'll need your energy, and you won't be distracted by a grumbling belly.
- Find a friendly face or two. Making eye contact with a few of the people you know in the room will make you feel more comfortable.
- Be sure you have a drink (alcohol or not) in your hand or at least in your vicinity for when you are finished speaking. That said, don't have too much to drink prior. :)
- Start with a smile. It will put everyone at ease and help you relax.
- Speak up, slow down. Take your time so people can understand you and let it all sink in.
- Avoid shuffling your feet, playing with your hair, or fidgeting.
- Try not to use clumsy filled like "you know" and "um"
- Keep calm. If you find yourself getting a little chocked up, take a couple of breaths or sips of water to pull yourself together before carrying on. Similarly, if you make a mistake or lose your place, just correct yourself, and continue.
- Go out with a band. While anecdotes are great for garnering a few chuckles, they don't effectively wrap up a toast; end on an energetic upswing. When you are done, transition by saying something like, "May I ask you to stand and join me in toasting..."you could also end by saying "To..." and extending your glass in the direction of the honorees. Cheers!

Wedding Wednesday: Tip of the Week...What the Pros Want You to Know, Part 8
Music…
When choosing live entertainment for your wedding, make sure that you know the styles of music the musician or band can play proficiently; don't assume that they play everything as this is hardly ever the case. Also, don't wait until the last week to request your special songs. Musicians will need at least 2-3 weeks to prepare any kind of music that is not already in their repertoire.
