DreamGroup…
We are getting married this September and
someone just said to us the other day that we need a marriage license!?! This is
the first we have heard about this! Is this true? And if we do need
one then where do we get it and how much does it cost? Who would have guessed...
Thx!
Stephen
Hello Stephen,
Good questions! First of all check out the handy dandy BC
Government website for all the “Getting Married in BC” need to knows… http://www.vs.gov.bc.ca/marriage/
It offers tons of useful information as far as finding a marriage commissioner,
obtaining a license, protocol for changing your name if desired, locations for a garden ceremony, etc.
To answer your questions… Yes, everyone
needs a license to be legally married in BC (but, not to have kids!
I think they have that one totally backwards! lol). It is super easy to obtain one
though. Simply walk into London Drugs at Broadway and Cambie (yup that's what I said London Drugs) and head to
the insurance department (or see website above for other participating
insurance offices near you). The cost is $100.00 (No tax! Savour it as
that doesn’t happen often!). Only one of you need go, but it’s a smart
idea to bring a piece of mail or I.D. belonging to your spouse to confirm
proper spelling of names. That's not mandatory, just helpful.
You can only pick up the license 0-3 months before the wedding so based on a
September wedding you are good to pick it up anytime. All the best with
your wedding plans Stephen!
